The topic of this paper is the geographic information system and its application for distribution system management. At the beginning of the paper, the technical and business structure of the distribution system in the Republic of Croatia is basically described. The organizational structure of HEP ODS is described and the basic data of the distribution network in the Republic of Croatia are given. The structure of the MV and LV network is briefly described, followed by the basic elements of the distribution network and some interesting information about them. After that, the general GIS system and the vector and raster data type are described. In the fourth chapter, the application of GIS in power engineering is elaborated. The advantages after the implementation of GIS and the areas of application of GIS in distribution are listed. The fifth chapter describes the introduction of the GIS system in HEP ODS. GE SW DeGIS, a unique GIS system intended for the entire HEP ODS, is described in detail. Its basic characteristics and some of the modules that make work easier for employees, especially for call center employees, are presented. In the same chapter, special attention is given to the introduction of GIS in Elektroprimorje, from the beginning of computerization, the introduction of a specific GIS solution ESRI ArcGIS to the introduction of a unique GIS system HEP ODS. The next chapter describes the integration of the GIS system into the integrated information system of HEP ODS, which achieves efficient management of technical and business processes of the distribution system. After that, the connection of GIS and SAP systems using CIM standards is described. Finally, the introduction of GIS tools in distribution systems in Argentina, France and Thailand is described.
