This paper deals with a distribution network, with a focus on its automatic restoration system. The paper covers theoretical facts regarding the complexity of the distribution system, system automation, and provides an example of automation in the medium-voltage loop in the city of Opatija. For easier access, the paper briefly presents and introduces the distribution network, its elements, and structure at the beginning of the work. As an introduction to the decentralized automatic network restoration system, the paper also encompasses a centralized structure, commonly known as the SCADA system, which is ultimately connected to the decentralized SHG system. The SHG system, as a central figure in this work, combines hardware and software interfaces that enable the implementation of a self-sustaining network algorithm, allowing for fault isolation and localization without human intervention. The SHG system is expected to facilitate the management and control of the implemented area and brings remarkable reliability indicators for the power distribution network. Considering that this is a new technology, there are prejudices regarding its implementation, but if we want progress in the management of distribution systems, it is essential to give it a chance.
